absurdity by cweeks absurdity by cweeks
while looking through my devwatch i saw a photo by *FideNullo -- of which, i won't say which one -- and it inspired me to find a scan of a neg from jan/07. whilst looking for that one, i saw this one.

seriously, vegas is absurd.

note to self: make photos from taxi's. do not roll down sickingly tinted windows on the escalade and start making photos. they all think you're someone when you're only a guy who knows taking a taxi from henderson to the strip sucks. why? because, first, the bastards take 1.75 hours to get to you and, second, i'm on some henderson taxi black list because i told some asshole to fuck himself because he took 1.75 hours to get to me.

on point.

normally, i think i would have preferred a fifty. that would have cropped the escalade's window frame.

but when i looked at it again i knew i left that in there for a reason.

this is what i saw.

not a crop of what i saw but really ... what i saw.

everything vegas is.

and isn't in one fucking frame.

new condo project.

overpriced bait-and-switch grand canyon tours.

fake elvis.

feeling his motivation.

fake spinner rims.

t shirts for $4.99 probably made in china.

i'm sure the rims are as well.

a dude standing in an alley.

tourists looking at the tourist center.

cold drinks.

i'm positive served in a yard-long.

made in china.

then again, the fuckers serve pepsi almost exclusively on the strip.

that sucks in and of itself.

i only got one frame.

and that's kinda what it's all about.

at the time i was in vegas i didn't usually have my own transpo. i waited in bucolic henderson for my beautiful j to return from work.

usually i didn't need to go to the strip for anything other than work.

even though i work with amazing people at properties on the strip.

i learned all about an industry magazine for "vegas drivers."

not that it was very useful knowledge.

but it made me smile that the driver enjoyed it.

dunno ... photographs like these make me realize why i had this o.c.d. thing of making frames of stuff i see...

and want to see for as long as i can.

because that 1/125th of a second ... won't happen again.

and i can put 36 of those on a single roll of film and they still don't add up to a second.

out of how many countless seconds.

it's absurd.

really.

leica mp. 35/1.4 summilux ASPH. 1/125th at f/5.6 1/2. ilford delta 100 (normal). lab scan. +8 cont. minor levels.

Did you have to fix the photo because of the cheap tinting? I had a similar issue in one of my photos: [link]

I took it in the bus on the fly and there was some thing on all the windows and I can't get rid of it in photoshop :(

who said the tinting was cheap? ;)

honestly, there wasn't anything i had to do with it.

yours does look a little un-contrasty. hmm...

Yeah I love that pic of mine... I tried to fix it in photoshop cause as you can see it's got streaks at the bottom but it made it worse. I really love that pic because it was lined up perfect with the dogs being black white and black lol!

I know that well. Seeing that it reminds me of the seedy side off the strip. great capture.

Elvis lives! I've always imagined Vegas to be some really surreal, excentric and tacky place. To be fair I've more than likely seen this exact scene before (or something very close to it) at the seafront of my home town of Scarborough. I hate the cheap, tacky seaside look but it makes interesting Martin Parr-like photos.

Is that Elvis at a rental car place? :giggle:

I must admit that there is a whole lotta shit in this frame to talk about. I don't know where to start!

You rode by ... didn't even get a brother a t-shirt. Hell, they were only 4 for $9.99 (before the sale). Heh.

I haven't been to Vegas in months. I need to get out there. Maybe in a few months I'll make the trip. I'll pick you up in Henderson and we'll make it to Pure in 30 minutes. ;)

"then again, the fuckers serve pepsi almost exclusively on the strip.

Haha I share the same sentiment. It sure sucks when a place serves Pepsi exclusively. They keep having to resort to doing this in order to get Coke's market share.

awesome!
my best friend lives there in culver city (we'll be staying at her place), and a film producer my mother worked with in czech lives there, as well, and i gotta meet up with him.
i would love to meet you... i was hoping my mother could come along, too, but she has some stuff to take care of in japan. dammit!
i'm coming with my sis, and since my mother won't be joining us this time, instead of 1 week, we'll probably be staying only mon 4/2~thu 4/5 (or till fri). lotsa stuff to do in nyc during the weekends!

Cool!! umm let's see, I want to leave my number to you, 'cause I don't think I could get to DA when I'm trying to have fun in LA. haha.
I think I have your email add...hm I mean the DA email address, but I don't know how often you check that. :(
I've emailed you before, a while back, though, 'cause I've been trying to come to LA from a while back.

I'll just send you my number via DA note for now.

gosh i'm so sleepy... wtf... -_- sorry with the dots [...]

Best Regards

Isn't it strange that all of the Elvis impersonators always depict him after he became old and fat. They never show the young Elvis!! hehe!
That tells you something about the age and condition of the mimics!

everything and nothing all in one --

in India -- since you are the foreigner -- the taxi drivers try and scheme out of you enough money -- so they take you in circles before you reach th destination -- making it worth their while -- too bad this time -- when i was there -- my mother knew the roads -- the minute the taxi went off the path -- quite alot of words exhanged from my mother to the driver -- anyway -- we stopped the taxi -- got off -- and guess what -- our destination was just two blocks away -- we walked -- later days

I really appreciate the fact that you actually write something to go with your images. I am so fucking sick of ...

That is not a discription folks! God forbid any of you dot dot dotters ever actually have to speak about your art work because you'd just end up mumbling dot dot dot, and the guy interviewing you would look at you like your some kind of super idiot (not unlike the most famous super idiot the Pres) Also thanks for the details of the shot, ie camera lens fstop, shutter, speed dev ect. I really appreciat that too.

Ok ok so I am not exactly one to talk but My details are at least 25 or so words including location, film or dig, development and post process, and a story if I have one to go with the image.

Have a great day.

I want an exotic car!

I just like that you can have 34 moments of frozen time that you can turn into any number of any size pictures of that moment in time, and you can fit all 34 of them into a tiny little canister, and it's all compact and shit.
Yep, and shit.

I know that exact spot in Vegas. How much of a douche must all of those workers feel to have sit there and pedal their wears onto people. It really is just another form of the hussle that goes on in Vegas. Some have good suits and are Whales, others dress like valet dude's and give out tickets to horrible free shows.

I'm going to Vegas from Weds - Fri, hope I can get some great shots. :)

I :+fav:'d this, not because of the picture, but because of your comments about it. I get it, the time thing. I mean, you just think back, think over everything, there's just so much that goes on, in any given amount of space, large, small, whatever; things happen and the only way of being able to go back is to see the picture to remember that exact moment where you had that epiphany, or that special moment, anything of significance, or even just nothing at all. Just... memories. And then you're hit by a train called the present. Saddening isn't it?
