homeless dog by cweeks homeless dog by cweeks
whilst walking down some street in the middle of napoli i happened upon this dog. motionless. lifeless. i saw that he was breathing ... but ... he was just out of it.

i prefocused (off by a few inches) ... and put the camera at his level. did not want to get too close nor get on my hands and knees on this dirty ass street. if the dog would have waken, he would have bitten the shit out of me. i don't know that ... but ... perhaps.

i don't know why but this photo trips me out.

leica mp. 50mm nocti. 250th/1.0. ilford delta 400 (normal).

Looks like he's trying to get the wall to scratch his belly.

A critique? More focus on the dog would have been nice. Especially considering the ground before the dog is being focused on, which is where my eyes were first drawn. Takes away from the picture slightly.

Also, I would have tried to wake the dog, just to make sure he wasn't suffering from something like brain damage from being beaten. That is an odd place for a dog to just fall asleep. This coming from a person who volunteers at an animal shelter almost daily.

About all the comments that were made about taking the dog home giving it water, etc.: Personally, I would've tried to take the dog home if I found it in my own neighborhood. Of course, I don't know what it's like where you live, so I'm not judging you. There are a couple of ways to win a fearful dog's trust though. Don't make any eye contact and do not approach the dog, let the dog approach you. If the dog doesn't show any agressive behavior, you can try to turn your back to the dog and lower your body to the dog's level and wait for it to approach you. Maybe it's helpful for your interaction with homeless dogs.

About the photo: I just love it. The uncertainty of not knowing if the dog was hit by a car or if it's just asleep and having happy dreams makes it very mysterious to me. And of course I'm a huge dog lover :)

Well, I live near Naples and I could say that we're used to see homeless dogs like this one... when I'm abroad I notice that in other countries you haven't the same amount of dogs hangin' out alone in the streets.

I wouldn't be so sad about this dog, 'cause living here I learned that dogs live a better life being homeless than being locked in a dog pound, that here are very similar to lagers. On the street, they're free to walk, run, they have a lot of space around them (in the dog pounds there are also 5-6 dogs in very small cages), they always find a place for sleep. Moreover, here lot of people has the habit of leaving water&food for them in the corners of the streets.

Well, I know that's not how the things for them should go, but at least they're not suffering as someone out of Naples could think.

By the way, nice shot!

Nice shot.
I can't understand why people abandon dogs so much..i hate and despise those people... I actually gave a new change for two abandoned Spanish dogs that were treated really bad. First one came home to me about an year ago and other one just 5 months ago!

I think what is most sad is that you have not done anything. Could have reached water, having called a veterinary or something.
cweeks Featured By Owner Jun 30, 2008
in a perfect world for sure.

being a bit more than a tourist? what would you have done?

have you actually done exactly as what you'd rather i had done? please cite examples.
Emaleth-0 Featured By Owner Jun 30, 2008
Never saw a dog dying, but quite a few birds, and all collected, sane, and those who survived left them fly.

We can not be alien to the misfortunes of others, either a human or an animal.

Theres no perfect world, but one much better where each of us put what we can to do good. In our country or other things to do are the same.

I didnt meant to be rude.

I hope I have been clear, I find it difficult to write much in English.

I have a dog. She use to be hit all the time in her old stupid owners house. But they gave her away for free to us. But, whenever i passed by there fence hiding behind on the other side, there stupid daughter would always hit it and kick it with her boots on. They had heels. So, when they left, i would jump in there fence and hug her and let her know its ok. She would be laying on the ground. That poor dog. But now, shes with me now though. She's gotten fater and his be being fed now more than how here stupid old owners did. I'm glad she's with are nice family now. I love dogs. Why didn't you save it and bring it home? That poor dog. I have a feeling it wouldn't bite you because i has probably been hit already that its probably scared. That poor peice of nature.

That dog wouldn`t bite you, there is a some kind of a true superstition that dogs that sleep with belly up ale very people-friendly. It`s a animal psychology, letting other see your unprotected belly is a sighn of trust, you can easily guess witch dog will be calm to other animals if, when play together it let other dogs knock him on his back.

But, photo is awsome otherwise ;)
