patience by cweeks patience by cweeks
it's los angeles. i find that i'm probably driving way more than walking. unless its because i parked a long-ass way to where i want to go and then i walk. if driving ... usually i'm driving way too fast. but ... sometimes ... there's traffic. i'm forced to drive slow.

rolling up on cahuenga and hollywood to get on the freeway ... i noticed these two people.

why would one be anxious to get on a bus that must take forever to get where one wants to go? dunno.

i have found that a 50mm is perfect for shooting through my car window. perfect. the 35's get too much of the mirror or whatever else.

leica m6ttl. 50mm/1.0 nocti. 125th at 4.0. ilford delta 400 (normal)

hey man every time i run through your gallery, another one jumps out that i somehow looked over before. thats this one. . . for now. anyways, i love the various gestures with the arrow on the sign, the character's sightlines etc. theres so much movement in such a still scene. and its also got elliott smith and he is/was just so wonderful. anyways, i suck with words, great job, another fav for sure.

I've been through your photo gallery here and could see that you are a skilled photographer. Many think that you are lucky being able and allowed to shoot all those celebraties. I, by far, prefere this style of photography. What really "hit" me is the way the guy dressed. Doesn't make him look younger than he is though :D If you don't mind I will put you on my devwatch to make sure to come back and check out your existing stuuf and your photographs to come.
Best Regards, Rainer

I really like shots like this. Capture of everyday life- frozen in the moment. I love all the various details in there- so many wonderful things to feast the eyes on. Great work my friend =)

tinia Featured By Owner Dec 22, 2004  Hobbyist Photographer
i find this photo too busy and a little distracting from the main focus of where you want us to look...
good idea though..
cweeks Featured By Owner Dec 23, 2004
where do i want you to look?
tinia Featured By Owner Dec 23, 2004  Hobbyist Photographer
well... assuming from your title :) i would think you want me to look at the two people waiting/the idea of waiting
but instead, i feel like im distracted by the large white writing on the window behind them

i find that the contrast is awesome in this shot... just very busy. my eyes dont focus on one single thing. they're kind of jumping back and forth between the people, the writing, the bench, the big white pillar/wall in the back and the mini sign.

haha its a good photo in a small version, but once it gets big my eyes go crazy :p

Great candid! I love how candids tell such a story. This shot is almost as good a conversation piece as it is a composition. Well done!

What really gets me in this shot is not the aparent anxiousness of these two people, it is how these two people are really giving us a view at bigger picture of the subculture of mass transportaion.

See people who drive in cars or take a cab, or basically who do not need to wait or walk a lot to get to their desintation usually wear a different type of shoe. Whether it is flashy, high heeled, dressy, trendy etc the one thing in common is that they are usually not made to walk in for long periods of time.

Here we can see how this subculture dresses to better suit their ways of life. Comfortable shoes, comfortable clothes. Everything made for waiting or long journeys. Nothing is flashy, everything about these two is ordinary and comfortable.

What surprises me is this woman's lack of street smarts. See her purse? It is huge. It is practically wide open and away from her body. It must way a ton though to prop it up on that trashcan instead of her lap or the seat next to her.

What I also find interesting is this man. This man looks an awful lot like John Glenn to me, (who is really a very sweet man with a great family) but his clothes are very interesting... if you can visualise this man with a younger man's head the clothes would fit right in. Yet at the same time, he does nto appear out of place in what he is wearing either, it suits him well. What I am curious over, is since there are two seats left on this bench, and the woman is not in the middle, why is the man not sitting down waiting? He does appear that he needs to rest by leaning against the pole. And it does not appear as if this woman would mind him sitting comfortably with a space in between them? I guess the person in the ad was taking up too much space in those two remaining seats. :)

I guess that is also just another part of the mass transportation subculture, to not make eye contact, to not say hello, to not be comfortable sitting two seats or less from a total stranger while on your way home, work, the grocer, or where ever you wish to go.

Thank you for sharing this one, I really do love it and how it got my brain really thinking today.

Merry Christmas though, be safe, enjoy your loved ones and have a wonderful holiday.

jiwasz Featured By Owner Dec 23, 2004
Interesting analysis. Although the woman's purse is not on her lap she is still protecting it. Her arm is through the handle. No one is going to easily snatch it and run. She's a veteran of mass transportation.
KittyTrishia Featured By Owner Dec 29, 2004   Traditional Artist
Hhehehehehhe you must have never had your purse stolen. Even though her arm is through the purse handle, it can easily be snatched. It is loose, the handles can be cut (it happens) or it can easily yanked from her arm. Her arm is already in a downward stance, it would let go of the purse very easily if someone were to quickly and strongly grab her purse. Or someone could easily pick pocket her purse since it is wide open.

But..... enough of that. Thank you so much for the very kind comment about my analysis.

i used to wait on a bus from gardena to long beach every day for school and work. On a bad day it'd take 3 hours to get there. I was always grouchy and extremely anxious because if you weren't paying attention when the bus was coming near and didn't stand up and look eager to get on, they WOULD drive right by without a care.
Fentae Featured By Owner Dec 22, 2004   Writer
I love it! But only because of that picture on the bench. It really gives that picture that everyone is waiting. Really great work. :D I might just :+fav: this one! :D
