may not be submitting a lot here but lately ... it doesn't mean i ain't fuckin' shootin' ...

so ... an art director calls me the on a wednesday, "dude, can you shoot jennifer tomorrow?"

not only was the call time way earlier than i like ... 10.30a.

i just don't do 10.30a but for this a.d., yes, of course. i was still bitter. but i had to line up a location as well. i hate studios. they're for control freaks. in fact, mario and i had this conversation yesterday. fuck lights and strobes. available light and bounce.

i mean ... i get there ... there is a stylist, her assistant, a publicist for the hotel, hair and makeup.

i appreciate the fact that all of those aforementioned people are there for me and they want to do a great job ...

but my attitude ... is ... that i get to play ...

with light ... not from a strobe, mind you.

and cameras.

the makeup guy says, "how's this look? do i need to change it?"

granted this wasn't "my team" as anyone on my normal team would never ask.

but i said, "dude ... i make fucking photos ... i don't do makeup. but .. yeah ... it's all good."

usually i have the art director on set as well.

he was in florida.

usually i kick everyone out of my set. publicist included. i like the intimacy of just myself and my subject.

and i prefer shooting chicks.

oh shit ... did i just say something which is going to make someone reading this -- whom has the obligatory daddy-issue -- think i'm trying to objectify women?

whatever.

grow-the-fuck-up.

anyway ... my normal team just leaves me alone.

in fact ... my assistants ... really ... are there to gather up gear and carry shit.

i don't need them with me when i shoot.

okay ... if there are 20-30 looks in 6 hours ... they're loading film bodies.

so ... this photo ...

it's basically a digital test. no more 'roids .... just digi!

the real photos were made with a leica mp and a 50mm/1.0 and ilford delta 400 (normal).

jennifer is one of my favourite people in hollywood. she's a kick-ass actress and a helluva poker player.

her b/f is the unibomber.

in poker parlance ... not the dude who used to blow shit up.

having heard her interview i knew poker was a part of her life and i wanted to do something ...

so she's laying on the bed and i just start scattering cards on her.

i told her, "act dead."

maybe i wanted to really be a director.

that's what everyone wants here in la-la-land.

to be ... a director.

it's odd that the queen of hearts landed on or near her heart.

we did three looks in 1 hour and 10 minutes.

she says, "you work fast. quick and painless. i like that."

"i love when chicks say that to me."

yep.

cut to: gathering the gear. going to valet and seeing sean penn. first all he saw were cameras ... then he saw me ... and smile, "dude, where the hell aren't you?"

seriously ... sean has one of the best smiles i've ever seen.

i wish more people saw that side of him.

although i had to wake up early ... this was really an amazing day.

a judge even let me off on a ticket!

anyway ...

i've got to get in the shower and get my day going ...

canon eos1dm2. 24-70/2.8L. 800 iso. f/2.8. like a 30th or so. available light from large window frame right. white foamcor frame left for a little fill.

Your right. Your choice of using available light works well here. Good job. You must be stupidly busy these days.
