Artist's Comments

it always fascinates me when i get an email from someone with an email address of hatemail@dickheadwannabe.com.

not that i have ... from that particular email address ...

but i got one from someone i like to poke fun at for their obvious lack of photographic skill and ... how they expound upon photographic technique and equipment.

he called me a paparazzi.

i corrected him and said, "if you want to use the term correctly in the singular, it's paparazzo."

it's funny to me that press line photographers (those on the "other side of the rope") and carpet photographers (those on the "right side of the rope") ... all get grouped into "paparazzi."

even though there are some who call us "carpet paparazzi" because we tend to get in their shots sometimes, its funny to me.

its funny because anyone who makes photos of celebrities sometimes -- by those who have no knowledge of entertainment publicity -- is referred to as paparazzi.

a wasp.

really.

at least, according to fellini.

whatever.

its interesting to me that paparazzi are those who are "uninvited and come to take pictures."

what's even funnier to me is that the real paparazzi are those such as x17, bauer-griffen, splashnews, west coast news and photo, WENN, the germans, the french, the english ...

and the good ones will make more with one photograph ...

than 90% of the people reading this ...

in their entire photographic lives.

yes, there are million dollar photographs.

not that a sanctioned photographer will ever make that photo if said sanctioned photographer ever wants to work with a p.r. agency ever again.

yeah, i've seen "what appears to be white dust under the nose of an a-lister" or "what appears to be an aging actor with a teen girl."

but i can't make that photo.

so what the fuck is up with this deviation's title?

when i saw this in some folder from some event ...

i remembered what i was thinking when i made it.

this was for stuff magazine ... they had something called the "Stuff Style Awards." And .... along with some notables like lindsay lohan ... i saw a lot of girls ... and guys for that matter ...

who would stand ...

and pose ...

and ... make eyes ...

for what seems like an eternity ...

on the carpet ...

they love that sea of cameras with such -- pardon the pun -- focused attention ...

they live for it.

they're addicted.

because they're sure to double up on the therapist visits should that attention ever wane.

or just an extra dose of white powder.

whatever.

and what's so funny to me ... is that several of the million dollar photographs made by "the uninvited" were actually set up by the subject him or herself.

because they're addicted ...

to the attention.

canon eos 1dm2. 24-70mm/2.8L at f/14. 1/3 sec. 400 iso. minor crop. minor levels adj. +8 cont. my normal unsharp routine withe the 1dm2 was not used because i didn't like it on this.

why f/14? well ... i wanted to catch a flash and had to be slower than a quarter sec. three frames. got one.

Let me see if I get it... carpet photographers work for companies like WireImage (who supply to magazines?) and the press ones on the other side of the rope work for the newspapers? :-?

Although refusal may offend, if you don't ask you won't get accepted.

pretty much everyone (that side and the red carpet side) sells to everyone.

i put "TABLOIDS OUT" in my instructions in file info but .. pretty much everyone sells to everyone ...

unless they're shooting exclusive.

but, yeah, wire has photographers on both sides of the rope.

the primary founder, by the way, shoots on the pressline side.

and he's worth a lot of friggin' money.

like a lot.

i know i can't look at the flashes when say a huge a-lister comes around.

it's blinding.

and very surreal.

but .. unless they have some light-triggered brain disorder ...

then no.
