tumblr.

Mon Oct 17, 2011, 2:55 AM
i know i don't post much here.  but i'm posting very often on my tumblr page.

hope everyone is well!  i'm still making photos all over the world.

feel bad not posting here but tumblr allows me to "queue up" photos and basically put it on autopilot.  i can also share them really big, too.  something i can't even do on my own blog.

besides ... the long-form blog is dead. ;)

cheers from la-la-land!

happy 10th birthday

Sat Aug 7, 2010, 11:33 PM
still can't believe this place is 10 years old.  the 10th birthday celebration was at the house of blues.  in between puppy training we went to see what it was all about.  the first thing i saw were llamas on a red carpet...

wow ... i forgot that i have to use html code to post.  not used to that as the blog is different.  decided not to put this on the blog as it's way more relevant here.

they launched something called ... um ... muro.  i'm assuming it's a drawing tool/program.

they had panels discussing stuff.

i guess a lot of people send post cards to hq.

muro works with a wacom i think.

there was a room where people made stuff.

unsure what she was making.

dA is definitely a dichotomy.

spyed mingled before his key note speech.

made me laugh.

dunno why.

she went to the room where they made stuff.  i suspect.  the range of people here really blew me away.  it was much different than the dA summit back ... um ... a while back.

i'm pretty sure the place was full.

angelo did a series of a few different deviants with what they did 10 years ago and what they've done today.  this one featured larafairie.

saw lolly there, too.  i think he lives in the woods somewhere.

angelo got two recognition-things.  something was from the state and something else was from the city of l.a.

some forgot their :llama: photos.

i, on the other hand, though, did not.

i've seen a lot of red carpets in my lifetime; this was definitely a first.

it was nice seeing a lot of people i know on dA but rarely see in person like Moonbeam13, makepictures, Waveswinger, godofodd and mccann. (i know i've forgotten people.  sorry.)

congrats dA!

cheers from l.a.!

p.s., all of the photos in this post were made with the leica m9.  the inside photos were at iso 800+ as there wasn't a hell of a lot of light but ... the fast glass worked well.

a couple blog entries...

Wed Jun 2, 2010, 10:37 AM
hope you're all well.  wrote about plastic bullet in last week's blog.  in as much as i love hipstamatic ... i adore plastic bullet.

there are more at the blog.

the latest blog entry has no watermarks.  first time i've done that purposefully.  640p wide photos ... hmm ... if you're really gonna rip me off ... have fun. ;)

many more on the blog.  the blog is all m9 with some photos made with the newest summilux 35.

just had a chance to browse the favourites folder for #street.  i think it's the most heavily edited street gallery on dA.  in fact, i know it is.  what's nice for the viewer is that one doesn't have to sift through stuff that was "just approved because we'll be nice."  that's not what moderation at #street is all about.  even the flickr hardcore street group's favourite's gallery is less edited.  you should go check it out.

okay ... i gotta set up a production schedule and call sheet for friday/saturday!

hope you're all well!

cheers from la-la,
chris

PETA sucks.

Thu Feb 18, 2010, 12:02 PM
thought i'd get that last journal off the front page.

defending the rights of animals is cool.  i personally rescue dogs from a certain breed.

but if you support peta, you're a massive idiot.

check this.

enjoy your fucking vegan lifestyle whilst supporting a group that actually kills cats and dogs.

thing is about most animal rights people ... they don't like people much.

and if you're also a peta supporter, clearly you don't like animals much.

off to the hdexpo.

funny...

Tue Feb 16, 2010, 7:24 PM
that a little group coxi, spyed and i -- with JamesBardolph and Gonzale and Treamus -- started could possibly inspire the vitriol of some.  okay, not some ... just one ... but ... this guy.  what's funny is that if this guy really knew shit about anything, he'd also know that he's also committed defamation.

what happens when one calls someone else a nazi in germany?

he's lucky that i don't sue him.  he's lucky the people he's labeled as nazis -- the true meaning, of which, i find deplorable -- don't sue him as well.  yes, screenshots and the entire page has been saved.

i don't vilify homeboy at all.  i totally understand what he was saying.

to us street is defined as a philosophy not really a technique as was written in the street blog.  when coxi and i talked about "a clubhouse" we never envisioned it becoming what it did.  it got messy.  it got away from what we wanted to start with.  in fact, we wanted something -- different than what was out there already -- smaller and more exclusive.  exclusive gets it root from exclude.  yes, i said it "we wanted to exclude" more than we accepted.  it's a club.  it's not a fucking democracy.

all of us have the same mindset about what street should be yet different tastes when it comes to street photography.  three of us have to vote in majority to approve about everything.

if you submit hdr to street, no, you're gonna get a decline.

street photography is making a truthful photo of something "just as you saw."  in fact, until recently i wasn't even sure colour should be part of the equation.  you see colour is different for everyone; only grayscale can provide an equal visual platform.  sure ... i'm sure some of you disagree.

that's totally cool.

but calling someone a nazi over someone's philosophy?

totally uncalled for.  illegal, actually, because damien-c not only is committing defamation but he doesn't have a foundation for whatever misguided theory he was trying to prove.

the funniest thing is that he appears to have been "kissing ass" as well.  nothing like dedicating hateful vitriol to a group's founder?  right?  disclaimer:  i very much like the yard's founder, StamatisGR.  in fact, i believe i invited him to :devstreet".  i'm sorry that we didn't accept much of his work at street.

i guess some those whose work was declined got upset and left street in protest?

and then write that we're total nazis?  supremacists?

you're a dumb-ass.  you do some alright work, though.

we'll see if i feel like wasting some money and suing him, though.

one other thing i find odd, actually, is membership in groups by "gallery moderators."  could it be said that certain gallery mods could actually favour groups by awarding their members dd's?

not that fucking dd's matter.

in fact, i believe we turned down SEVERAL requests for favourites or gallery inclusions of dd's.  when we declined we got "what the fuck?  you guys suck!  this got a dd."

that doesn't mean shit, just fyi.

in fact, i wish there were a way to check a box on a deviation which said "preclude from dd."  spyed said i was crazy for thinking something like that.  what i'm saying is that a pretty high number of the gallery mods don't even have "the eye" to decide what a dd is ... and isn't.

i'm not fucking calling them nazis though. because i'm not a dumb-ass.  i know that by calling someone that they could sue me.

anyway ... none of us here at street are nazis.  we're far from it.  we like our street photography classic.  it's a philosophy not a technique as coxi put it.

we're realists of what we want; we're not elitists.

hope you're all well.  sorry there are no photos here.

cheers from the balmy l.a.!  (yes, balmy)

random profanity...

Mon Dec 28, 2009, 9:40 PM
(a reprint from my blog at aphotocontributor.com)

not the politically-correct-for-facebook-blog i've done as of late.  so ... if pro-fucking-fanity offends you.  just look at the pretty photos.

i think having seen the mother-fucking-dog-show-shooter after i watched alexi's video

a spaz-tastic christmas message from imboycrazy! from alexi wasser on Vimeo.  guess some ebedding code is pretty ... um ... slanted towards advertising.  whatever.  watched that.  saw her enjoying her rap.  and saw that the last rap on itunes is/was "the grey album" by Jay-Z and DJ Dangermouse.  that would explain the profanity i think.

it's been forever since i wrote something.  damn.  amazing where time goes.  i read sev's blog last night.  read?  no, i looked at.  i read some.  it reminded me that i should write something.  like him i've been working a lot and doing pre-production and 2nd unit photography on my first film project.  fuck laforet.  he can't have all of the fun.  i won't have a crew of 20+, though. ;)  i wouldn't want one, actually.

wanna find out how many people it REALLY takes to make a film?  go to a set when it's raining like a bitch.  that's how many.  i've been practicing pulling focus and operating.  those 1st A.C.'s ... they have a hard job, man.  not easy.  not impossible, though.

what else?  worked alongside norman jean roy doing the behind-the-scenes of a national advert campaign.  i see that name on a call sheet and i'm like "fuck me ... this is going to be a day from hell."  i mean ... ask someone who's worked for/with "the biggies" and see what they say.  how about the famously published female photographer with a fucking capital P leaving her assistant in the mojave midday in the early summer because something fucked up.

and unlike most of the l.a.-ego-shooters ... this dude was so fucking cool it wasn't even funny.  i don't think he liked "behind-the-scenes-shooters" of the past because they ... shot with flash. ;)  i didn't. ;) huge leica photographer, too.  pretty friggin' cool trading stories with that guy.  most of the "talent" in l.a. couldn't measure up to about 10 % of this guy's photographic ability.  not only that HE'S NOT A FUCKING DOUCHEBAG who lets his assistants light it. ;)  you know who you are.

what else?  um. working, of course.  the holidays.  a bit of travel.  location scouting.  writing.

and ... my lab hates me.  i've shot one fucking roll of film since um ... a few months now.  i'm really that much in love with the leica m9.  in 90% of the assignments i'm on ... it has replaced the 5dm2 as my ambient camera.

oh, fyi, i'm no longer picking on rockwell.  no, i wasn't served with notice.  i've gotten to be internet-friends with him.  he loves shooting; i'm good with that.  he's actually pretty fucking nice.

back to the m9.  it really is something else.  in fact, the dng's pumped out of that thing are seriously, so different than what comes out of my canons.  the colours seem more pleasing to me.  i don't know about nikon; i don't use nikons.  i don't count anything out but ... for the time being i'm fully happy with my canons.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

homeboy's contemplating the canon-nikon-issue, too.  i asked.  promise.

seriously, though, i love seeing moments like that.  so many of them pass right by us.  and they happen all of the time.  all around us.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

did a holga-photo of the same beasts but i think the sky here is better.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

there was something kinda megan's list about this dude.  dunno. what.  but.  something.

fucking los angeles.  it was fucking november and homeboy's fronting as santa already.  i was a bit more sane than the woman off-frame who had her dog in a stroller and was talking to it like it was her daughter.  odd.

not that spaniels aren't children. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

very happy to be eating at local. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

who knew security guards washed at the dollar car wash?  i didn't.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

and nana smokes weed?  say it ain't so.

all of my illusions are fucking crushed.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i like photos of people smoking.  i'm jealous i can't smoke any longer.

i know ... i just looked at this whole take ... edit ... random selection of photos from the m9 folder ... and ... they're all colour.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

the little girl and then the old man ...

the m9 does pretty damn well in mixed sources of light.  even on awb.

i noticed the paramount logo on the fluorescent tubes indicating they were daylight balanced. made me laugh.  that i'm a geek for looking to see if they list a colour temp. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

have no idea where this is nor how it made it in my edit. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

ya' know those people who wear peace symbol-things?  i think they're whack.  not that she's whack.  dunno.  but in general. she's probably from the people's republic of santa-fucking-monica, though.  drives a prius?  perhaps. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

old men's noses and ears never stop growing, according to j.  when i was standing behind him that's what i was thinking and how big my own fucking ears are gonna get one day.

not that we ever get older than like 14.  15, maybe.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

he was reading a mexican comic book. see?  i'm right about the 14 year old boy thing.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

right before entering the screening point.

lot going on in that photo.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

j and the murph in beautiful wyoming.  i wondered how many mtf-idiots had shot that wall.  even in fucking wyoming.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

wonder if she scratched a winner?

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i'm not the only psychopath who travels with his dog. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i may have to take out my mp and make sure the shutter still works.  but ... the m9 does the exact same job.  conundrum.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

my lovely friend rachael.  i love when i get back to edit and there's more on the m9's card than there is on the 1dsm3's card. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

cute little guy.  this is dedicated to the best-damn-cat-photographer-slash-nail-tech i know.  sorry nhat. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

so much red.  had dinner with mr. jackson.  you should read his blog.  photos.  haikus.  'sall good.

really good photos, actually.

trippiest voicemail outgoing message ever, that guy.

trippy in a good way.

not trippy in a dog-show-kinda-way EXCEPT FOR THOSE WHO OWN AND BREED CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIELS.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i love this photo.  i love this dog, too.  chop's an amazing amazing amazing little pug.  chop chop.  that's what my gf says to me all of the time.  chop, chop, hook.

seriously, i wanna just shoot assignments i could shoot with just the m9.  dialing in a custom wb when some idiotic venue has no idea that people make photos under lights that don't have the best CRI.  google it.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

yes, a dog show then to an overpriced dinner ... yes ... on the fucking west side.  plenty of priuses!  plenty.  they even had drc on their wine menu.

this store can even whore-up christmas.  i mean ... not that it hasn't been whored before.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

a happy sea of blenheims.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

caption? fuck you and your puny 18 to 21 megapixels.

i think she said that, actually.

notice the one pentax dude in the background?

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

happy little guy.  the lady was cool, too.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

if i were that dude (and i hope to never be), i'd have a business card that said "motherfucking dog show photographer."  photo vest.  stance.  hard flash.  put 'er on program and fucking forget about it.  yeah.  dog show photographer.

i know.

he's probably nice.

then again, probably not.  i've met my fair share of dog photographers.  i mean ... i'm not the nicest person on the earth.  i'm not wearing a peace symbol hate nor do i drive a prius or "live at the beach."

if you watched these motherfuckers you'd think "damn, dog show photography is a serious fucking business."  80% shoot with digi-rebels with five-six glass ... with flash ... on program.

funny how some of them treat anyone they don't know with such disregard when they are lucky to have that kind of publicity.  my eyes see for millions.  theirs?  dunno.  perhaps slightly less.  i wonder if any of them got play in the washington post?  probably not.  then again, i didn't check.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i laughed most of it off and just made photos.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

it's a very fancy poodle for damn sure.

poodle people are a bit off.

dunno why.

spaniels rule.  they should just admit defeat.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

his dog, which i already forgot what kind it was, won best in show.  the woman on the left owns the dog.  white little thing.  terrier.  scotty.  something.  shit ... could have been black.  don't remember.  dude with the ribbon gets me though.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

see?  cavalier owners love their dogs even thought they're show dogs. :)

not that other breed's owners don't.  just sayin'.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

then again, some stupid motherfuckers buy their dogs online and have them shipped.  ya' know.  like cargo.  worse than that they buy dogs in dog stores.  pet stores.  look at those faces.  yes, they're the same ones you buy online or in stores or from brokers or from auctions.

thing is ... these fucking donuts who breed them don't understand the genetics of the breed.

you'd never know that the little guy on the right has a serious heart issue and he's only five.   he'd never slept on a bed.  up until last night he never even got to enjoy the wonderfulness of bacon.  in fact, he was probably never even petted.

concrete slab and chainlink.  they had to huddle to keep warm.

the owners/breeders/people without souls bred dogs like the little guy on the right even though he had a heart condition.  i wonder how the family who falls in love with their little puppy feels when the puppy dies at a young age?  the owners/breeders/people without souls wouldn't care.

if you need to know exact breed characteristics to fit your life and lifestyle and need a pure breed, please visit the akc.org.  search the breed you want and find the parent club then look for breeders.  these people give huge $$$ to research medical issues for their breeds.  they care so much about their breeds, almost to a fault, that they would never foster a bloodline known to have issues.

the little guys we're fostering are amazing little guys.  they're not hand-shy any more.  they enjoy watching t.v. now.  they're fed and walked regularly.  their inner-cavalier is showing finally.

j and i helped foster/rescue a few of the 29 little guys from a commercial breeder.  breaks my heart to think of the condition our little friends lived in.  disgusting.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

he's not disgusting, though.  maybe the tanger is.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

america's a trippy place.  somewhere between good-trippy and dog-show-trippy.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

this place was trippy, too.  bob is now a shrine.

to noodles.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i scared the shit out of a parking enforcement guy.  all he saw was some dude ducking lower than the window of the car.  crazy.  guess parking enforcment guys are twitchy.

and scratchy.

probably.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

we had a "bit of weather."  don't worry. it passed.  it's still beautiful.

not that you should move here.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

another peace-symbol-frontin' guy.  dunno.  you be the judge.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

whilst on the subject of apparent benevolence?

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

so much going on.  the california dream.  i should get all art-donkey.

but i won't.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i like salt and pepper.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

and i like shooting motion. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

and seas of bikes.  okay maybe not seas of bikes so much.

but spaniels for sure! :)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

seriously, unlike some explorers of light ... i find the whole rangefinder experience beneficial to my work.  if you know it's weaknesses and exploit them, you'll make photos an slr-equipped shooter could never make.  once you become, though, an explorer of light -- or HDR landscapes, ya' know -- perhaps rangefinders loose their magic.

dunno.

then again, i think if you don't do street you're a pussy.  but whatever. ;)

the m9 for me is just the most simple piece of equipment i own and it allows me to just make photos without having to think too much.  home run for me with this thing.  i don't think i really need to review-review this camera because ... i'm seriously in love with it.

time to make a sauce.

and meet a friend for espresso.

hope the new year finds everyone well.

best wishes from l.a.

f o i e g r a s l o v e r s by red5

  • Listening to: the grey album - jay z and dangermouse
  • Reading: cine filter research
  • Eating: a nice sauce and pasta
there's no way i have time to do multiple blog entries at different places ...

since i'd like some of you to know what's going on, i'll re-post my blog entries here since the rss feed for the journal isn't an option...

since i've been on this digital-tear with the leica m9 ... well ... i think the lab has been a bit neglected as of late.  in fact, i've just looked at some scans.  there was a roll in the venerable mp, which has been giving me dirty brassed glances of late, which was shot in june and i recently finished it.  apx 25.

it's so interesting to me ... this whole film vs. digi-thing.  a visual effects supervisor friend told me about some symposium they had about the issue in the context of cinematography.  they had every single one of the best cameras on some giant rig shooting the same thing.  one of the biggest issues was that film captures sun/light flare much-much-much better than digi any day of the week.  that was true of every camera tested ... even ones that guys like me will probably never get to operate due to cost.

it's all good.  i'm happy shooting my 5dm2.  so happy i didn't cut my motion-teeth on camcorders with results all looking like they're shot at f/8.

also ... i've scrapped all of the cavision stuff in my video bag besides the matte box ... for cinevate stuff.  the build quality of cinevate's stuff is ridiculous.  the "leaders-cough-cough" like zacuto and redrock ... well ... i'll just say nothing.  don't believe the hype.

how about an homage to mr. rockwell? ;)  should have had an nd grad filter on it, though, for a true homage and perhaps shot on velvia. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

ever since he called me out in his blog ... we've gotten to know each other ... and ...

he's not a bad guy.  in fact, he's pretty damn nice.  in fact, what i've really discovered is that he loves photography ... and ... i'm good with that. his photo of an oak tree's pretty nice, too.

don't think i'll be friends with the onlinephotographer-dude any time soon.  at least ken makes photos and doesn't just craft words together to impress others who ... probably can't shoot either.

the world has not ended.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

not even according to the mayans.

this was our guide at the tulum archaeological site.  he knew everything.

then again, he was a guide, right?  he should know everything about that site.  besides the shard of glass that almost punctured my foot -- not just the flip-flop -- that place is rad.

yes, i said rad.

don't care if you don't like it.

nor do i care if you like my black-bordered photos on flickr.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i think j was iguana-papping.  unsure.  the film was from june.

my memory isn't that long.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

those mayans sure knew where to build a nice resort.  temple.  resort.  whatever.

same thing.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

where that woman is standing is where a piece of really nasty glass almost went into my foot.  thank you reef for making flip-flops which don't allow nasty pieces of strewn glass to puncture feet.

i don't like southern accents.

sorry.

they piss me off.

random.  i know.  but i'm in an airport and the assholes behind me are ... just annoying.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

j found a friend.

damn i forgot how much i love film.

damn m9.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

cancun had a very nice airport, actually.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

where's waldo?

then skip forward like 3 months. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

had to expose those few last frames on something before i had to drive back from the icky west side to drop off at the lab.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

homeboy is there every time i walk past.  every time.  i don't think he goes anywhere.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

took b street-shooting.  she asked if we could go.  got an m8-two and the 1.4/24 mounted up for her and we took a metro to one of the best street-shooting hunting grounds on the planet.  hollywood blvd on a sunday afternoon.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i looked at her stuff and she actually did quite well.  most of the frames were perfectly focused.  put the auto-iso feature on.  set it on A.  started teaching her about f/stops.

pretty cool day that was.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i even saw mj's angel.

you know it's gonna be a great day when you see mj's angel.  right?

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

that's bella.  we rescued her.  she stayed with us two weeks.  she ripped my heart out of my chest.

but ... her heart is all good according to our vet. :)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

hadn't ever connected with a dog in the way i connected with her.  sadly, hadn't even really connected with murph the way i connected with her.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i think murph misses his playmate.

cavs play the same way.  they connect.  it's a breed-thing.  our friend says it's a royalty-thing, though.

dunno.

i do know i have more film scans to show. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

my friend joanna and io echo.  the venerable mp and the new wonder ... the m9 shot right next to each other.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i don't think the m9 could have handled that last photo.

digital sensors and flares aren't all that good of friends.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

guess that's why i shoot both.

my right thumb gets bored shooting digital.  i could get one of those fake things people put on m8's but i don't think i will.

late-night gardening anyone?

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

someone needs a sensor-cleaning.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

lunch.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

dedicated to my austrian-homey.  dunno why but when i shot that i thought of him.

odd.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

fyi.  it's apple season here.  just so you know.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

those fujis are/were amazing.

not as amazing as a cavalier face, though.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

juxtaposition.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

was wondering where the friggin' PETA sticker was.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

i love shopping-photos.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

and west coast sunsets.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

and bamboo.  and ... the fact my nocti doesn't back-focus any longer. :)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

and the fact you can roll around l.a. and see productions everywhere.  so happy producers have tired of the false promises from detroit, boston, new mexico, south carolina, etc., etc.  bring production back to where "the professional crews" are. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

attn:  jon gosselin ... please go away.  attn: editors ... stop putting these douchebags on the covers of magazines ... they're not worthy.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

one of the best restaurants in vegas, rm seafood.  and i love having the nocti back.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

the bitch is back. ;)

she's not a bitch, though.  she's cool.  and it's fun to make fun of the same people. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

clean bella. :)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

keeping the eye on the prize as it were.  he's like a shark. ;)

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

yes, light meters are still relevant.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

even whilst lighting a spaniel with the new hensel lithium porty! :)

i think murph actually weighs less than the new lithium packs.

crazy-light.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

even frank was in on the spaniel-tography. ;)

j ... wrangling...

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…" />

so ... after much consideration i've decided i will post new photos on my flickr page.  forgot what it was like to actually have to do an html tag.

updated the blog a new entry about the continued and flagrant bastardization of photography.  i'm sure those of you who think street should include hdr and multiple layers will probably get pissed off, then again, i've been over what the masses think on dA for quite some time. ;)

if you think the "street" in this shooter's portfolio of street (personal>street) is street, well, i'm sure you won't agree with me.  and ... if you do the same, you have gone from "photographer" to "photo illustrator."  nothing wrong with that as long as you don't lie about it.

kudos to the dA staff for making my page spam-free for like the last couple months.  2, in fact.

although i'm not submitting here, i still read comments and notes and appreciate the devwatches, favourites, etc., etc.

hope you're all doing quite well!

cheers from the kinda-balmy l.a.!

twice in the last week when i've come here to just "check in" my page was riddled with friggin' spam.  and i don't mean like 2 or 3 instances.

it's very reminiscent of checking in at myspace to empty the inbox ...

which is full of spam.

dA was ... and i mean "was" ... one of the places this didn't happen.

what happened guys?

it's very annoying.

hope everyone's very well and without spam.

and the new zeiss ikon zm goes to...

Tue Nov 18, 2008, 12:57 AM
  • Listening to: death cab

goes to ...

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…">

erik borst of amsterdam, the netherlands.  not only is zeiss sending him their zeiss ikon zm body but he's also getting the zeiss biogon t* 2,8/28mm lens.   edit:  i just saw that erik sent me an email about the camera settings ... canon 30d .. 16-35L/2.8 at f/7.1 and 1/640th.  see ... not only was it digital but it was also colour! ;)  i'm totally not biased. ;)

yes, i know ... it's in colour.  i know everyone would probably have thought a b/w photo would have won.  it was fun watching the votes coming in.

and the final tally ... resulted in the erik's photo winning.

not only do i love the fact the horizon is nice and straight ;) ... but i love how many different things are going on.  funny that after i've checked out the guy looking at his camera to the older guy making his photo to the woman doing something in the background i'm drawn to the guy in the center with his binoculars ... and i end up smiling because of the little girl looking at what i'm assuming is her mother.

patrick kahn also commented ... "This photo is perfection, composition and color-wise, it is stunning. It has a painting-like quality to it, the rich tones and the background which is almost surreal. The people in there bring life to this already beautiful setting, and they look almost vintage, as if this shot had been planned and cast. The dark-non descriptive clothes bring contrast and enhance the strength of the imagery without beeing a distraction. Just an incredible shot."

hoping to get some more quotes from the judges.  wanna thank ben roberts, bill pierce, severin koller, nhat nguyen, patrick kahn, laith majali, hossein farmani and elinor.  there is no real order to this list i just took it from the original announcement page on uber.  rip.

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…">

and a huge-huge-huge thank you to richard at zeiss for both sponsoring the prize and ... keeping his word even after uber crashed and burned.

yes, i'll have some words about that whole sitch soon.

again, thank you richard.  that was beyond cool.

we got 600+ entries.  there were some amazing photographs to look at.  the choices were difficult.

soon ... i'll post a blog with photos representing all of the judge's choices.  in the meantime ... the two following photos -- even though there's no prize therewith associated -- represent 2nd and 3rd places...

2nd place was ...

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…">

by markus hartel of new york city.  very nice moment, mate.  thank you so much for entering.

and last but certainly not least 3rd place goes to ...

<img  src="i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41…">

by christian rollinson of the united kingdom.  i think you'd be stoked, christian, if you know who liked your photo the best out of all of them.

maybe i'll tell.

maybe i won't.

we'll see.

i'm stoked for erik of amsterdam!  it's so nice knowing you used your contacts and were able to get a photographer -- a deseving photographer, of course -- a new piece of gear and an amazing piece of glass.  i wonder if wank ever did anything like that? ;)

again, thank you judges, submitters and, of course, zeiss.

yes, i have lotsa photos to share.  scans.  some digi.  that said ... i've been beyond busy.

good stuff.

but beyond busy.

hopefully, i'll be able to post more over the next couple days.

archiving has been taking up a lot of time.  it's been nice, though.  tedious.  but.  nice.

hope this finds you all well!

thank you all for your patience with the contest.  i know many were anticipating the results.  me, too, actually.

cheers from the not-so-smoky-la.

p.s., guys ... everyone who posts stuff on the web should learn about iptc and including at least copyright information on your photographs.  aperture does it very well.  so does photo mechanic.  photoshop is clunky.  dunno about light room.  but ... seriously ... when your iptc information is in there all someone has to do is see the file info and at least have a clue as to who made the photograph.  i'm just saying.

my professional website ...

since i don't update here, i thought you may want to check my commercial website to see what's up.

forgot how to include photos on this site.  i'm so used to using other tools when i write my blog that i forgot html stuff even existed.

when you click on my commercial website you'll see an "i" button which includes limited caption information about the photographs.  clickbooq makes it so easy for a busy working photographer to update their website.  given that i should do it more often but ...

alas ... i don't have much free time ... i'm pretty much working all of the time.

well ... anyway ... you can go see what i've been up to recently!

hope you're all very well and making pretty photos!

Street Photography Contest

Sun Jul 20, 2008, 2:24 PM
  • Listening to: Girl Talk (google him, he's a dj)
  • Drinking: coffee
No, I haven’t completed a new .pdf, as much as i would like to!  I was able to ask a sponsor to hook up a winner of contest with the Zeiss Ikon rangefinder and a Zeiss ZM Biogon T* 2.8/28mm lens, though.    Thank you Zeiss!  Well … besides that … I’m in the planning stages of a street photography video. ☺  Anyway … here’s a screen shot of the new Uber.com Street Photo Contest

Doesn’t matter when the photo was made … current … old … whatever.

Because, in my opinion, street is pure and real … and I felt that so many people were faking their non-film street phtographs, we have elected to make it mandatory and compulsory for photographers submitting entries and having used Photoshop to “edit” their entry to turn on DETAILED HISTORY LOGGING.  Here’s what it looks like in Photo-Chop…

On a Mac it’s Photoshop > Preferences > General > History Log > Save Log Items to Metadata > Detailed.  Dunno what it is on a PC but I would think that intrepid pc-using photographers can figure it out. ;)  Seeing as how most using it are using a boot-legged version. ;)

No, we haven’t not included anything about if you have edited with Aperture or other non-destructive programmes such as LightRoom.  Yes, I know there are plug-in’s available.  I don’t feel enough people use either of them and even if they did, there’s not a whole hell of a lot one can do to dramatically alter the photograph.

Since the AP and Getty appear to trust their photographers, I’ve never had to deal with the History Log.  It would appear Reuters requires their photographers to turn on the History Log on every photograph sent to the picture desk.  Yeah, it’s a pain in the ass but I think it’s good Reuters does it.

Honestly, I think anyone posting anything anwhere (e.g., here on dA, uber, flickr and all of the other sites) should at the very least include their exif metadata.  And … if they’re shooting “the preferred medium” they list how the photograph was made.  I’ve always done that hoping that photographers trying to figure shit out … can look at this data and perhaps see how to do things for themselves if they didn’t already.  I’m just here to help. ;)

See … I’m not saying erdalkinaci did anything or didn’t do anything.  I do think it’s odd that the NatGeo 2006 International Photography Contest Winner’s Page … is gone . 2007 is still up.  Yet … the NatGeo page with more information on Erdal is gone.  Interesting.

I think it’s also interesting that he doesn’t include any of his metadata information in his dA gallery.  I’m not saying his work isn’t beautiful, at least some of it, I’m just saying that some of it … like this one … something’s off.  Unless he was using a tllt-shift. ;)  But we wouldn’t know that because he hides his exif metadata. ;)

Bet NatGeo didn’t require their submitting photographers to not only submit their entry though their site contest page but ALSO send an email with their submission as well including the history log.

Yeah, I know sneaky photographers can fake it.  Whatever.

I’m not saying Erdal did or did not do anything, actually.  I’m just saying that … I’m not going to put a faked photo in front of the judges I’ve gotten to look at the submissions:

Ben Roberts - Photographer - United Kingdom

Bill Pierce - Legendary Photojournalist  - United States

Severin Koller - Photographer and Favourite Among dA Admins. ;) - Austria

Chris Weeks - Photographer - United States

Nhat Nguyen - Photographer - United States

Patrick Kahn - Art Director - United States

Laith Majali - Photographer/Editor - Amman, Jordan

Hossein Farmani - Founder of the LUCIE Awards - United States and Europe

Elinor Scott-Sutter - Photographer - United States

Besides being able to hook up a cool prize … I like getting people’s work in front of people from the “real world of photography” and not just something online.  Ya’ know … the real world where emo-photography doesn’t really exist.  Where … pageviews don’t really mean shit … and really have nothing to do with making a nice photo.

So … I hope to see some amazing street photographs!  Film or digital … whatever.  I guess someone by now can see that I’m not interested in seeing some sneaky photo-montage masquerading as street or photojournalism. ;)

And, as always, thank you guys for the comments, the faves, the devwatches, etc., etc.  I may not be active here but I still lurk my friend’s journals and their deviations.

Good luck everyone.  Check my blog for more information about the contest.

Cheers from Los Angeles!

everyone that tried to get the 1,000,000 screencap.  just so you know ... i'm not going to try and determine if anyone faked anything.  i mean ... if they can friggin' fake it in the tiny amount of time i took to get it posted and emailed to me, more power to them although ... i don't feel that's the case.

mr. lynch is going to poland! :)

i didn't like the look of that screencap thing i had posted ... so ... i'm replacing it with a headshot for my dog's agent, manager and publicist.  she has no assistant.  wait ... i'm her assistant...

kidding about my dog "having people," besides us, of course.  she walked in the studio and i propped her up, turned on the hensels and lit her from above with a beauty dish.

soon .. my deviations will look different.  they'll be no bigger than 6" on the longest side at 72dpi with a larger more prominent watermark.

also ... i'll be deleting all of the journals as soon as my assistant can download them as html ... for posterity and future posting somewhere else.

i may be enabling certain aspects of prints again as soon as i figure out a few things.

thank you all, again, for the faves, the devwatches, the comments ... everything.  you know who you are.

hope you're all very very well!

cheers from the amazingly-temperate los angeles!

be the first to note me with a link to a screen cap of the 1,000,000 and the print is yours.  11x14 ... printed in a darkroom on fibre ... not a dA print, even though dA prints are nice.

there are no ties.  there's no second place.

looks like deviants from poland are quick on the print-screen or apple-control-3. ;)

was tired of looking at ...

Tue Feb 12, 2008, 10:36 PM
  • Listening to: hard drives humming
  • Reading: rolling stone
  • Watching: hard drive progress graph
  • Eating: dunno yet
the last journal i had posted ... ya' know ... whilst lurking.  yes, i still check out my friend's newest submissions even if i don't post journals or photos here.  i liked the photo i included on it ... but ... even for a dA-lurker ... it was getting old for me.

thank you so much ... equivoque for the dd the other day on ...

so very nice of you.

briefly ... what else?  um ... transferring RAW's from one hard drive to another.  yep.  and ... very much enjoying shooting

"the beast".  pdn reviewed both the nikon d3 and "the beast."  love that the reviewer, whom did both reviews, said that "you really can't compare the two."  it's like apples and oranges.  the people who shoot "the beast" don't shoot it for the same reason someone would shoot the d3.  "... canon clearly had hasselblad in their sites." ;)

um ... i'm also shooting more medium format as i just picked up a contax 645.  you wouldn't believe the deals on this camera.  a camera, which shoots zeiss glass, and is now less than a third of what you could buy it for in the past.  showed a meager little polaroid to another shooter and he said, "fucking zeiss glass, man, nothing could have let the subject hold up like that against direct sunlight."  'tis true.  not even canon.

leica could, though. ;)

RIP polaroid.  sad.  very.  like really fucking sad.  that said, i literally bought an entire store's remaining stock with another photographer saying, "it's going out of business?  you aren't buying it all are you?"

i smiled.

and ... um ... just read a great web-article by mahomo about composition that i think many will find useful.  i found it very very very well done.  sure you'll see some familiar names, photos and perhaps some new names and photos.

*looks at hard drive progress on the fw800*

jeesuhs ... how long does 20gig take to friggin' move.  "the beast" will require some new drives to store what it spews out ... 35mb RAWS ... jpg-large opening to 60mb.  damn.  some sundance editors weren't very happy last month for sure.

very very very happy that apple released aperture2!  i now have a proper RAW-handling facility for the beast.  i've never really "gotten" manufacturer-provided software.

yes, i know i can use lightroom.  but i don't.

gave away the canon 5d and the 50/1.4 in our "best page challenge" to a philip aka flipo.  first an m7 then a 5d!  feels nice to help in the participation in giving back!

so ... wanted to just say thanks to elinor ... and look what happened.

again, everyone, thank you AS ALWAYS for the comments, faves and devwatches!  i may not comment as much as i did in the past but ... i do, in fact, read 99% or so .. of what's posted.

hope you are all very very well and making amazing photographs.

cheers from the presently-balmy la-la-land!

are you fucking kidding me?

  • Listening to: the puppy home from the hospital
  • Reading: html tags
  • Watching: future weapons
  • Eating: cinnamon gum
  • Drinking: sprite
so ... i noticed that an "old friend" appears to have started posting again.  a talented guy.  then i check his page again ... and see "This user is no longer a member of deviantART."

so fucking chicken shit.

what the fuck did he really do?  nothing.  he called out shit when it needed to be called out.  he had opinions.

and i think he had the same views of the people who did the banning as i did.

seems like certain people can't just let bygones be bygones.  seriously amazing that someone who has a grudge and probably has nothing else going for them but the power to do what they did ... do it again.  i'm sure they cackled like an old woman who hadn't had the joy of sex when they hit the ban button.

don't worry ... you can find sev on
his uber page and at his blog.

my cataloging and copying and saving project has been going nicely.  soon .. this page won't say "This user is no longer a member of deviantART" but it will be almost as blank.  i want my content to have a certain type of home surrounded by a certain type of people ... and managed by a certain type of mindset.  a mindset of art.  not just some faux appreciation but perhaps an innate understanding and appreciation.

go ahead ... chase away "real talent" ... that's a great fucking way to build a community guys. ;)

just posted a blog which may be the longest of record with 69 photos.  took forever.  my fingers and eyes are still tired.  i think this may be my favourite photo from the entire trip ... that ... and i need one of my own in a vertical format... for one of the walls...

for that and more ... go read the blog. ;)

speaking of our walls ... check out the blog post ... some familiar people made those photos ... which are on our walls.  some of those on our walls are still active here ... some banned because ... well ... for chicken shit reasons ... it's all good.

that's why the internet is amazing.

there's a home for everyone. ;)

5 NOVEMBER 2007

this photo by rebelatheart and suggested by erainey is a spectacular moment.  take some time and just look.  i did.  and ... i loved it.

just so you know ... the whole mario-doll-photo-thing, like it is for reuters, according to references on their blog, is over for me as well.  i'm bored.

also ... posted a new photo blog.  anyone see this blog?  motherfucker is 17 years old.  i know what class i think that coverage in his blog was.  look at the photos.  you'll see what i mean.  check out what philiip did with some nice web 2.0 tools.  free tools, i might add.  i think you'll think it's pretty damn cool.  busy week again.  dunno how many times i'll get to do this... thank you ALL for the support for that doll photo bullshit.

UPDATE:

the first person to note me with a link to a screenshot gets a one-of-one 1,000,000 dA pageview commemorative 11x14 fibre print.  :)  just putting that out there.

8 NOVEMBER 2007

have no idea who this cat is ... but ... GFXPunk pointed out both the photo and some other series by the same photographer.  very nice.  not here nor on uber.  whatever.  a good photography is good photography.

posted a blog about my friend cory and her nylon magazine party, another one about the maxim videogame thing and one more about an assignment over a year ago for hollywoodland ... all shot with film. ;) hope you're all well.  and, thanks, for everything.  as usual.
